Kaito is an energetic, passionate, somewhat hotheaded person who lives for dreams and romance. He gives dramatic, encouraging speeches to the others and believes you need to take risks for the sake of your dreams and shouldn't limit yourself nor ever give up. He describes himself a hero type and sometimes declares people his "sidekicks". Kaito always tries his best to unite the group. He's very loyal to his friends and is always there to lift them up. However, he has a complete belief in friendship and trusts who he wants to even against all evidence and logic, making some see him as rather naive or dumb. He also has a hard time showing weakness and admitting his mistakes, as well as showing his own troubles, even if it means lying to his friends to remain a strong figure that they can lean on.

Even though he's the Ultimate Astronaut, Kaito has never actually gone to space; he's still in training. He also states that he falsified documents pretending he was older so that he could take the training qualification test, but he aced it and was accepted anyway despite the fraud being discovered. Going to space is Kaito's biggest dream, he's always working towards it and constantly talks about it. He often refers to himself as "The Luminary of the Stars" and talks about the Universe being on his side.

~!After Kaede Akamatsu's execution in chapter 1, Kaito punches Shuichi Saihara for "acting like a little baby", stating that Shuichi was pissing him off by not even trying be strong and stand up against Monokuma when Kaede had passed her wish onto him in her final moments. Later, Kaito feels bad for lashing out at Shuichi, recognizing he's in pain and decides to cheer him up: Kaito proclaims Shuichi as his "sidekick", stating that he'll take responsibility of Shuichi's investigations and deductions so that he doesn't have to worry about anything else but discovering the truth. He also begins hosting training sessions every night with him in an effort to make him feel better and stronger. The two become good friends, and Shuichi even states that he started looking forward to their nightly training.!~

~!After the second trial in chapter 2, Kokichi Ouma reveals Maki Harukawa to be the Ultimate Assassin, rather than the Ultimate Child Caregiver like she had claimed. Because of this, Maki began avoiding the others, stating that when people find out she's an assassin, they always end up hating her or trying to kill her. However, this prompted Kaito to persistently try to spend time with Maki in an effort to get her to "take off her mask", sensing that she didn't really want to be alone and believing that she isn't a bad person. He gave her the nickname "Maki Roll" ("Harumaki" in Japanese) and began bringing her to he and Shuichi's nightly training. Maki acted annoyed at first and breezed through the exercises Kaito gave them, but over time began to enjoy the routine and open up to them. The three of them bonded and became good friends through this, and Maki even developed feelings for Kaito.!~

~!In chapter 5, Kaito is taken hostage by Kokichi Ouma, who claimed to be the mastermind. Maki came to rescue him and shot Kokichi with a poison arrow, but when she went for the final blow, Kaito dove in front of Kokichi to save him, getting hit by the arrow instead. Panicked, Maki rushed away to get an antidote, but when she returned, she was locked out; she threw the antidote through the bathroom window, but Kokichi took it and pretended to drink it instead, leading Maki to believe she had killed Kaito. In reality, however, Kokichi gave the antidote to Kaito after Maki left, saving him. Kokichi then got Kaito to help him with his plan to defeat the real mastermind and stop the killing game once and for all: by shutting down all the cameras with an electrobomb, and then having Kaito kill Kokichi with the hydraulic press as to create an unknown victim case where the mastermind wouldn't be able to make a proper judgement during the trial. Kaito initially refused, but complied after Kokichi pointed out that Maki would become the blackened if he didn't, since she shot him with the arrow. They first recorded a video of Kaito about to be crushed by the press, and then just as he was out of view, they switched, and Kokichi got under the press instead with Kaito's jacket still there so that the sleeve was hanging out. Kaito started the machine and camera again, killing Kokichi by crushing his body until it was unrecognizable, and cutting the power cord so it couldn't be raised again to examine it.

At the trial, Kaito operated an exisal with a voice changer, pretending to be Kokichi using a thorough script that Kokichi had given him, equipped with what to say for every situation that he could think of. In the end, however, Shuichi was able to deduce that the person inside the exisal was Kaito, and that Kokichi was the one who had died. After the trial, Kaito explains their plan, claiming that it was a huge success, despite its apparent failure. He then says that he doesn't have much time left due to his illness that Shuichi speculates is the very same virus that they were told killed everyone outside. Then, during the execution, Kaito succumbs to the illness instead of the fate Monokuma had in store for him, coughing up blood one final time and dying with a smile on his face inside the execution's rocket ship with a view of the stars outside.!~
