Chu Wanning is an elder of Sisheng Peak, as well as the master of Mo Ran, Xue Meng, and Shi Mei. He is one of the most powerful cultivators and the owner of three holy weapons. He is extremely righteous and believes strongly in putting the welfare of the people before his own desires and personal relationships, which became the catalyst for his major conflict with his disciple Mo Ran in their previous life.

He believes in upholding justice and fairness, insisting on receiving a punishment of 200 flogs and manual labor even as Sisheng Peak's esteemed Yuheng Elder and bearing an injury from the Ghost Mistress.

Chu Wanning is keenly aware of being placed onto a pedestal and idolized to an unrealistic degree by others, often being mistaken as ascetic. Conversely, he has low self-esteem, referring to himself as ugly, bad-tempered, and unlikable. He is particularly insecure about his appearance going as far as looking at the mirror and making negative comments about his features.

Despite having a sharp tongue, he has a soft heart and regardless of situation, he would never allow his disciples to be put in danger. Nevertheless, he isn't quick to praise his disciples or encourage them to come up with theories or explanations during solving a case.

He has a sweet tooth and can't eat spicy food. He is afraid of heights, because of this he almost never uses his sword to fly.
